First Corinthians 14 contains more than a simple division between speakers and silent listeners. Tongue-speakers can be told to be silent, prophets move between speaking and receiving positions, others discern, all may learn, and recipient-side participation can itself be active and even verbal. By following this communicative structure, the study asks whether Paul’s restriction concerns a particular speaking position within an ordered contribution-setting, rather than every possible word a woman might utter in the church.

If women possess genuine spiritual agency and may pray and prophesy, why should the man–woman distinction matter within the particular speaking situation of 1 Corinthians 14? This final study follows Paul’s wider argument through created relationship, one-body membership, differentiated spiritual gifts, love for the other, prophetic subjection, the appeal to the Law, and recognition of the Lord’s command. It proposes that Paul’s categories allow genuine agency within received relational order: subjection does not extinguish agency, and agency does not eliminate order.

Interpreters have resolved the apparent tension between 1 Corinthians 11:5 and 14:34–35 in many ways—by treating the verses as an interpolation or Corinthian quotation, reducing the force of 11:5, narrowing the prohibited speaking, distinguishing meetings, or reconstructing a particular Corinthian problem. This study compares the principal proposals and asks what each one must do to Paul’s wording in order to make the difficulty disappear. A solution may resolve the problem, but the important question is whether the text itself justifies the move that produces the solution.
