Paul’s Relational Grammar: The Role of Differentiated Prepositions in Paul’s Theological Method

This full journal article investigates how Paul uses differentiated grammatical relations—especially expressions such as “from,” “through,” “in,” and “toward”—to construct theological meaning rather than merely decorate ideas already formed. Focusing particularly on 1 Corinthians 11:11–12 and its relationship to 1 Corinthians 8:6, it argues that Paul’s sequence of relations preserves distinction, dependence, mediation, and ultimate divine source without collapsing them into a single category such as hierarchy, equality, or mutuality. The study develops a method of relational grammar and visible synthesis, asking theological interpretation to preserve the wording, sequence, and differentiated relations through which Paul himself builds his argument.

This appendix explains the reading method used throughout the technical study without reproducing the much fuller argument of the companion journal article on Paul’s relational grammar. It distinguishes direct observation, structural judgement, contextual or rhetorical inference, and theological synthesis, and develops the principle that interpretation should keep visible the grammatical and literary relations from which its conclusions arise. Worked examples from 1 Corinthians 11:7–12 and 8:6 show how relational grammar, sequence, resumption, contextual differentiation, and visible synthesis can help prevent interpretive summaries from replacing the text they are meant to explain.

Having established the structural difference between the two passages, this chapter asks the deeper theological question: why should the man–woman distinction matter within the communicative order of 1 Corinthians 14? It brings together Paul’s created man–woman relations in chapter 11, one-body membership and differentiated gifts in chapter 12, love’s refusal to seek its own in chapter 13, and subjection, order, the Law, and the Lord’s command in chapter 14. The resulting synthesis is that subjection does not extinguish agency, and agency does not eliminate order.

This chapter examines the principal attempts to reconcile the woman who prays and prophesies in 1 Corinthians 11:5 with the women who are told to be silent in 14:34–35. It considers interpolation, Corinthian quotation, attempts to reduce the force of 11:5, questioning and disruption theories, prophetic-evaluation proposals, final adjudication, overlapping speech, differing meeting contexts, and historical reconstruction. The governing question throughout is: what must each interpretation do to Paul’s wording in order to remove the tension, and does the text itself justify that move?

If women possess genuine spiritual agency and may pray and prophesy, why should the man–woman distinction matter within the particular speaking situation of 1 Corinthians 14? This final study follows Paul’s wider argument through created relationship, one-body membership, differentiated spiritual gifts, love for the other, prophetic subjection, the appeal to the Law, and recognition of the Lord’s command. It proposes that Paul’s categories allow genuine agency within received relational order: subjection does not extinguish agency, and agency does not eliminate order.
