First Corinthians 11:5 depicts a woman genuinely praying and prophesying, while 14:34–35 tells women to be silent in the churches and says they are not permitted to speak. This introduction allows both statements to stand at full force before attempting to reconcile them and asks whether interpreters have too quickly assumed that they describe precisely the same situation.
